Physiograms

What your seeing here is a photographic record of gravitational forces being exerted on a pendulum. In this case the pendulum is a flash light hanging from the ceiling by a string with a camera set on a tripod aiming straight up at it.
The focal length of your lens and what your trying to achieve will determine the subject to lens distance. The string should come straight out from the back of the flashlight to minumize oscilation. The room needs to be very dark. I use different colored gel filters & star filters for colors and special effects. I also use a black piece of cardboard over the lens to stop the exposure as opposed to closing the shutter which may lead to camera movement during multiple exposures. You place the filters you want to use on the lens, turn off the room lights, turn on the flash light and swing it, then open the shutter. Experimentation is the key to getting various effects. There is no set rules with this, you just kind of go for it. And of course, once you get the images into Photoshop the possibilities are endless

Warning: I strongly recomment sitting in a chair while doing this. Also when done wait a few seconds before trying to walk as the rotation of the light in a black room will distroy your equilibrium.
